“So it starts with an access point of social media, or Facebook, or whatever it may be. But then it's making the in person friendships that really take you far. Because then you learn, where are you taking your child to swim class? What pediatrician is good with pronouns?... Or just like, hey, we're getting the kids together in the backyard, does anybody want to come over and hang out” - T.
Building Community
Parenting can be particularly challenging and isolating for LGBTQ+ individuals due to fewer peers with children and difficulties in finding supportive communities.
Interviewees reported enhanced mental health and well-being through their chosen social networks, whether formed locally or online.
These networks, focused on LGBTQ+ families, offered parenting advice and referrals to trusted healthcare providers and childcare services.
