Self Advocacy in Healthcare
Navigating fertility and parenthood as an LGBTQ+ parent can be challenging due to limited culturally sensitive healthcare providers, but it is achievable.
Seek healthcare providers who are knowledgeable and affirming of LGBTQ+ identities. Ask about their experience with LGBTQ+ patients and their inclusivity approach. Communicate your needs clearly and ensure your medical records reflect your correct name, pronouns, and identity. Bringing a trusted friend or family member to appointments for support can also be helpful.

You deserve respectful and competent care. Speak up if you feel misunderstood or disrespected. With mutual respect and clear communication, positive changes can happen.

Tip: Based on interview responses, birth doula and mid-wife support have been helpful for self-advocacy because they are familiar with the hospital system, birthing process, and much more. If you want to learn more, check out Let's Doula This in San Francisco.
Self-advocacy involves knowing your rights, asking the right questions, and having confidence in yourself. Here are resources to support LGBTQ+ parents in healthcare settings.
